The Hula Hoop Makes a Comeback
Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 12:01AM Who remembers the hula hoop from years past on Preschoolers and Peace? Funny how things come around again- here's Christian learning some good self control by spending a little time in the circle.
From the original post:
"[The hula hoop] is one of those neat little tools that works for us when house-proofing a child. This was an idea I'd written about awhile ago, but on the day this photo was taken, we put it into practice while I made dinner. She was on the floor near me and she played with blocks and a doll.
I like the hula hoop because the parameters are clear. She has no problem understanding where she should be (inside the hoop). She was two at the time and she did quite well in the hula hoop for about 20 minutes."
Whatever works, eh? ;)

The Hula Hoop is a GREAT idea. My kids each have a small rug that is "their" color that we use for similar purposes.
This is one of my favorites!! So very clever and simple at the same time.
I love that the hula hoop in the picture is clearly bent from years or use. :)
Thanks for sharing again! I love this idea. I two kids 3 and under. Best of all I already own a hula hoop. I can't wait to train them to sit in the hula hoop. It will make my life so much easier when I need them to stay out from under my feet-- like dinner prep time.
Neat idea! Thanks.
I like this idea, and I would like to implement it. However, do your kids end up scooting across the floor while still inside the hula hoop? I could totally see my 2 year old doing this. How do you teach them to stay inside? Thanks.
Sara-
Yep! I've had two takes on the scooting:
1. I watch them and discipline
2. I don't mind if they scoot as long as they stay in the hoop!
It's up to you which way you prefer.

I use to make my children stay right at my side for an extended amount of time. After fifteen minutes or so they were sure they never wanted to be stuck there again! I always made sure I was extra busy during that time span. I do love your idea, but my youngest son would have put the hoop around his neck and just carried his circle with him wherever he wanted to go.
