Baby Joe Update: Monday Morning
By Kendra | June 30, 2008
“Your son is very strong!”
Dr. Jorge Montes, Joe’s Critical Care Doctor
Due to a blog friend and the above quote , we’ve now begun referring to him as “Mighty Joe.” Thank you for all of your prayers, visits, food, and help with our children, the house and Andy’s practice. You have made this first weekend very easy for us.
We met with Joe’s doctor this morning, overall we are still maintaining his systems and putting out fires where they start. Remember, there is no medical treatment to stop the virus, only to deal with the symptoms that the virus causes. So, overall there is not much change today in what we are doing, just monitoring him for changes. The best guess is another week in the ICU and even longer in the hospital. With that said, there have been some improvements with our little guy.
Here is what has improved:
*Liver enzymes have dropped!
*Blood clotting has improved!
*Seizures have stopped and the EEG has been removed!
*He is still peeing tons!
*He has tolerated food well since yesterday without a return of diarrhea
*He has tested negative for the bacteria “c. diff.”
Prayer Requests:
With all the good news, there is still a lot to pray for in this little guy’s life.
There is still the unknown:
*Kidneys to start working on their own.
*Heart damage
*Brain damage
*Liver damage
General Prayers:
*His immune system to start working against the virus.
*For Kendra to feel better
Parent’s Assessment
We were greeted with open eyes again this morning. He looks less swollen and much more responsive to touch. He is much more grumpy! Kendra got to hold him this morning!
For photos and commentary, you can read theMangoTimes!
Thanks for praying for Mighty Joe!
Kendra and Andy

We are so happy to read some praise reports! As I’ve read updates, I’ve shared them with my husband and children. We are all praying daily for Joe and for all of you. Praise God for what He has done so far, and may He continue to strengthen your precious baby boy.
I’m a blog lurker, and have appreciated some of your links and/or advice shared. Thank you for your faithfulness.
May God keep His Mighty hand over all of you. We will be praying throughout the day, every day!

Wonderful news! Much to praise, and still much to pray for-will remain faithful.
He looks MUCH better (the top of his head without all those EEG wires!) and not nearly as swollen and of course, in his Beautiful Mama’s loving arms. Oh, Kendra-I bet you just had such emotion within you as you finally got to hold him!
Faithfully praying and filled with joy at some wonderful progress,
S

I have tears in my eyes as I rejoice that “Mighty Joe” is doing better… I remember the first time I held BUbba when he was in the NICU just a few days old, yes a reason to rejoice! We are still praying for “smart pee” and for no long term damage.

Calling him “Mighty Joe” reminds me of this verse, about our Mighty God, and how he is rejoicing over Mighty Joe even now.
Zephaniah 3:17
“The LORD your God is with you,
he is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing.”

I, too, have tears in my eyes as I read this update that “Mighty Joe” is doing better. Know that so many here in Georgia who don’t know you but are bound as bothers and sisters in Christ are praying. Aunt Gracie and I both stood in for “Mighty Joe” last night at Bible study with prays being lifted. Georgia is definitely “On Your Mind”!!

Been praying—-peace for you and pee for Joe! What a wonderful example of Christianity the two of you are for your children. They are truly blessed to have you as their parents.
