Summer Reading- the Best Kind!

By Kendra | July 18, 2010

Well, that’s because I am partial to summer and tend to think of anything we do in summer as the best kind. If you’re reading Preschoolers and Peace in a reader, please click through to see the titles and links.

I’m reading…

They’re reading…

We’re reading aloud…

I love other people’s reading lists =) We listened to Dr. Doolittle on audiobook a few years ago, I had never read the book and wasn’t too familiar with the story. So it was… surprising. ha. I liked it, but it had some spit take moments. Very un PC! Like the part where the African Prince spends all his time reading European fairy tales and wants to change his skin color so he can woo Sleeping Beauty. We also got to talk about racial epitaphs since there was one included in this book. But overall, a very interesting book!

Good stuff!! Your teens are reading a title or two from my own queue. I’ll have to see about catching up with them and comparing notes.

So I have to ask … Blue Like Jazz? What are your thoughts? I have been considering reading this as it is an oft-quoted source in books refuting the emergent church.

    Penny for your thoughts?

    Rachel-

Don Miller’s writing on loving people more and self less is worth the price of the book.

I haven’t read it yet RJ, but it comes so highly recommended. I heard an interview with Francis Chan on Family Life Today and respect him very much. Let me know what you think.

I have mixed emotions about Crazy Love. While reading it, and for about three days afterward, I thought it was about the best thing I’d read in the past ten years. But for me it was like Chinese food (Chan-ese?) in that it didn’t leave me with a lingering sense of satisfaction…it was here and gone. I’m sure there are others who would disagree, just as they might not think that my choices are satisfying. But for me, it’s not in the class of, say, Loving God (Charles Colson), which has stuck with me like crazy glue for twenty-five years…

From above, I have read The Chosen and thoroughly enjoyed it. It crosses my mind from time to time still.
A few of the books are familiar from Noah’s AO reading list (the past year and coming up this next year) and also one I’m adding in for him from Sonlight’s American history years.
I haven’t read Crazy Love, but I am reading Chan’s Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit. I didn’t realize how guilty of this I was, and I am glad to be encouraged to correct my quenching of the Spirit.
I’m also reading one of your previous summer suggestions (I *think*), The Gift from the Sea. I’ve needed this message, too, and appreciate your recommendation of it.
    Happy Anniversary!
Guess what – I attended CVP today!! Felt so welcomed there. Truly a blessing.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” is my all time favorite. I still read it about once a year! We just gave our 3rd child Atticus as his middle name!!!

We are in a slow stage right now. I don’t get to read and my kids are all too young to read or sit for a long period of time (they are 3.5, 2, 2 mos), but they do like to sit and listen when my husband reads us “To Golden Shore” the bio of Adoniram Judson.

You go, girl! I just finished a book that I started while we were camping last week. Other than that I’ve not read a book (not counting read alouds) in I don’t know how long! I applaud you! :)
