What’s on Their iPods

By Kendra | July 9, 2010

So I said I was sticking with preschoolers, but I know some of you have teens on the other end of the spectrum so I will toss out some teen-related ideas as well. In the spirit of creating peace :)

I recently started adding sermons, broadcasts, and music into playlists for our oldest two sons. These guys like to listen and discuss, and I like that I can hear something and pass it along even if we can’t listen together. This has been a very good tool to open discussion on certain topics or to stretch them in their spiritual and academic lives. I’ve added songs I want them to be exposed to- strong male vocalists for my singing son and excellent guitar playing for my guitar player.

This is their current list (but my goodness, there is such a vast wealth of resources that you could add anything!)-

Thanks for this idea Kendra. I’m going to bookmark those links for later on when my kids are a bit older …my eldest is only 10 but would love this approach. Maybe some of your other readers have some suggestions of podcasts or talks for pre-teens??
So glad you are still giving tips for older children as well – even if it is only every now and then. You have such great ideas! :)

Thank you for the advice! Our oldest turned 13 in April so we’re starting a new chapter in our lives! Keep the advice for all ages coming!

    Hugs!!

Love this idea. Granted, I am a LONG way from having teenagers (hee hee!), but my 6 yo loves to use mine occasionally for a little quiet time to listen. I’m going to put together a little playlist for her with a few favorite audio books and some music for her. Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for sharing! I’ve already told Mark about the Sara Groves/Charlie Peacock podcasts.. he’ll love them. And since he’s the one who has time to listen to such things, I’ll pass along your recommendations! :)

It is so hard to think about my children being that old to listen to such things (my oldest is almost 6 yrs old)! I don’t know if I’ve ever seen them on P & P before, but do you have any suggestions for audio books/series for older little ones (to listen to while the other littles are napping)? My son has listened to a bit of the Narnia books on tape and I just ordered the first Adventures in Odyssey, but any other suggestions would be welcome! Thank you!

I was hoping this would be suggestions for younger listeners. :) I’ve been using an iPod for quiet time for those who have grown out of actually napping, but aren’t reading freely yet. Any suggestions there?

Thank you for this great idea! I appreciate the list of good “listens” and also just the idea of putting together a playlist for my older ones to give them a bit of a privilege and content while I meet the need of my youngest.

Love these ideas! My ipod is FULL of sermons! And we LOVE John Rosemond at our house.

Our oldest daughter, 18, is heading off to college and I would love to hear Voddie Baucham’s series on “Raising a Son-in-Law”, however, the links you gave above aren’t working and I couldn’t find these sessions on itunes. Any suggestions?

    Thanks so much!

    Jen-

Go to familylifetoday.com and do a search in the past broadcasts for Voddie Baucham.

We do not have young adults in our home yet (our oldest is 10) but I’m grateful for these kinds of posts- gets us thinking. AND it is encouraging to see others running the race before us.
